Have a Heart: Celebrating American Heart Month

February is famous for valentines and chocolates, but it’s also the most important month of the year for your hard-working heart.

We are joining the nation in celebrating American Heart Month. This is a time to pause, check in with ourselves, and refocus on the lifestyle choices that keep our hearts beating strong. Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States, but the good news is that many of its risk factors are preventable through the very things we advocate for every day: eating healthy, living healthy, and growing healthy.

Why Focus on the Heart?

Your heart is the engine of your body. When it’s healthy, you have more energy, better focus, and a higher quality of life. American Heart Month is about more than just awareness; it’s about action. Whether it’s managing stress, getting more sleep, or moving your body, small changes can lead to a lifetime of heart health.

Three Ways to Love Your Heart This Month

1. Fuel with Color

A heart-healthy diet doesn't have to be boring! Focus on incorporating vibrant, fiber-rich foods that lower cholesterol and blood pressure:

  • Leafy Greens: Spinach and kale (winter staples in the DMV!) are packed with Vitamin K, which protects your arteries.

  • Berries and Oats: Perfect for breakfast to keep your heart's rhythm steady and your cholesterol low.

  • Healthy Fats: Swap butter for that Rosemary-Infused Olive Oil we talked about recently!

2. Move Your Way

Physical health is a cornerstone of heart wellness. You don't need a marathon—just 30 minutes of brisk walking, dancing in your kitchen, or even vigorous gardening can strengthen the heart muscle.

3. Know Your Numbers

Take a moment this February to visit a healthcare professional. Knowing your blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and blood sugar is the first step in creating a roadmap for your long-term wellness.
