Roots for Life is a grassroots volunteer organization that was founded in 2017 to educate and empower communities to thrive by eradicating food deserts and food insecurity.
Rhonda and Tamara come from diverse nonprofit backgrounds, but both are driven by the same goal -- to inspire others to make small, incremental changes in their daily lives through fresh fruits and vegetables. Their work is centered in food insecure areas in Washington, D.C., specifically Wards 4, 5, 7 and 8.
The mission is simple:
To dedicate resources to educate and empower communities to thrive.
And, the approach to education and empowerment in communities is multi-faceted:
connect individuals, currently in food insecure areas, to locally grown fruits
educate on their nutritional value
empower a healthy change their lives
As Rhonda and Tamara designed their program series, they strategically incorporated ways to empower participants and encourage them to incorporate fresh produce into their day-to-day regimen.
With each program, participants will learn how to:
make healthy food choices
cook nutritious meals
grow foods through fun hands-on activities
Roots for Life’s overall vision is to inspire communities to make a change.
