How To Get Into Running

Trying to find a new way to stay fit this year? Try running! Running is completely free of charge and can be rewarding if you are properly prepared. Here are some tips for those who are interested in running.

  • Invest in a good pair of running sneakers - Investing in running shoes can be the difference between running comfortably or sustaining a serious injury in the midst of exercising. There are three different types of running shoes: motion control, cushion, and stability/neutral. Most stores offer evaluation and/or recommendations for shoes based on what you are attempting to achieve.

  • Consume a diet that is high in carbohydrates and protein - Usually doctors tend to steer people away from carbohydrates, except for if you are a runner. Carbohydrates nourish your body with glycogen; an energy source store that is muscles. Protein helps to build and maintain muscle mass.

  •  Train smart to smart to avoid injury - Training prevents injury and allows the body to adjust to the wear and tear that comes with running. Exercise physiologists suggest yoga and strength training be incorporated into one’s daily routine to see optimal results.

  • Consider a race - After running for a while to test your skills, consider signing up for a race. Many find races to be a good challenge! View the race as a commemoration of your hard work thus far.
