Welcome Home Basket Initiative for Transitional Residents

In 2021, Roots for Life started the Welcome Home Basket Initiative for residents in Washington, DC. The creation of the baskets was to aid in providing support to residents transitioning into permanent housing. When moving into their new home, many individuals and families lack basic household items to support living a healthier lifestyle. Regrettably, government-funded programs such as SNAP or WIC do not usually assist with these efforts.

At Roots for Life, we teach residents the importance of nutrition and healthy eating. Consuming home-cooked meals and nutritious foods can help families maintain healthy body weight, ingest important nutrients, and reduce the risk of developing health conditions.

Our Welcome Home Baskets can include the following new items: dishes, cups or mugs, cooking utensils, cookware, an herb plant, dishwashing soap and sponge, potholders, kitchen towel sets, baking trays, dish rack, cutting boards, cookbook, spices, and healthy recipe cards.

Thank you for the donation of Welcome Home Baskets. The baskets have and will continue to offer a warm welcome to residents moving into their new homes. The array of useful and important home good items uniquely presented in each basket serves as a meaningful expression of hope, care, and service. We are grateful for the thoughtfulness of your donation, as it honors our mission and values to provide services and stability in an atmosphere of dignity and respect.  -  Jaqueena Manahan, MS, Senior Director of Programs, N Street Village
