We're Empowering Communities to Thrive!

Food insecurity exists in every county in America, and in Washington, D.C., food-insecure areas make up about 11% of the total area.

When residents do not have easy access to grocery stores, obtaining healthy food requires an unreasonable amount of time and money. People living in food-insecure areas  often have no choice but to shop at quick marts, gas stations, convenience stores and fast-food restaurants.

These sources of food  are typically less healthy than fresh produce. A lack of healthy, nutritious food is linked to numerous health problems, high incidence of early death and worse educational outcomes.

Roots for Life’s programs work in conjunction with a comprehensive educational component that is designed to deepen the connectivity between people and the food we consume. Each program is designed to provide tips and techniques towards healthy living.
